Literally, "light" is a source of illumination and that which our sense of vision responds to, without it, our ability to see the surrounding world is void. But on a more intricate level, "light" is a million different things. Light is a blinding force that has the ability to wash over your body with warmth or crumble your flesh into ashes. It's traveling faster than time itself. It's an idea that manifested itself in your head without regard to conditioning or external influences. It's at the end of the tunnel...

...to me, light, or more specifically, a light bulb is symbolic of three things: ideas, inventions and the spiritual concept of "good". The individual reason that each of these symbolic interpretaions is relevant to my career in graphics is as follows:

  • The Icon for "Idea" - Everyone recognizes the light bulb from cartoons. When a character has a sudden idea, the light bulb 'pops' up over their head. As a kid I liked to watch cartoons, and now I am able to appreciate the iconic, cartoon light bulb for the subtle impact it had on society. It is, after all, the most universal symbol for "an idea".

  • Thomas Edison - In 1879, he perfected the idea of electric light, roughly marking the beginning of an era of new technological advancements that we're still in the midst of today. Computers, cell phones, PDA's are all relatively new in the scope of human existance and, at some point, a designer has or will get their hands on any one of these items and make it look better and easier to use. So the concept of invention is important to me for both inspiration, and a reminder to keep a constant tab on new technology so as to adapt to it in a way that I'll learn to understand it's function and give it the form that inevitably follows.

  • Light Prevails - You know. Light symbolizes good, versus evil. It's something we all take for granted. We all feel the same about dark vs. light because of our instinct towards day and night. Our waking hours are in daylight, and our vulnerable resting hours are at night. To me, marketing and advertising are external stimuli that tie into the influence of the consumer's instinct. In other words, it is the designer's job to decide what imagery is recognizable to consumers, and to apply it to the product or service. I aim for "good" design, hence the "light" bulb as an icon for RoyCreative, LLC.

There's a little bit about me, a word from the observer!
